Many countries on the African Continent and Afro-descendant communities living in the Americas are in crisis — ravaged by poverty, conflict, high levels of debt, disease and political instability. Now more than ever, Africa and its Diaspora need to work in solidarity to solve these common challenges and address the persistent effects of centuries of entrenched racism and discrimination.
TransAfrica Forum believes that U.S. policies that support human rights, democracy and sustainable economic development in these regions will promote justice, and real human security in the world.
Historically, TransAfrica Forum has worked to provide policy analysis from a Pan-Africanist perspective. At present our policy work is focused on ending economic injustice and the militarization of U.S. aid while supporting organic democracy.
Supporting Organic Democracy
Across the globe, Africans and Afro-descendant communities are working to build and expand strong civil societies dedicated to improving the quality and accountability of local and national governments. This includes establishing institutions to promote intercultural cooperation and civil society participation.
U.S. Militarization
In recent years, the "Global War on Terror" has dominated U.S. foreign policy. African and Latin American governments willing to comply with U.S. demands in the this war are the ones receiving foreign aid, military assistance and political support. The militarization of U.S. aid has under-minded real, sustainable development and jeopardized the security of African and Afro-descendant communities.
Economic Injustice
Since the end of the Cold War, the U.S. government has consolidated an ideologically conservative economic, political and military agenda on the African Continent, in the Caribbean, and in Latin America. At the same time, it is aggressively constructing an economic web, where narrowly conceived U.S. interests are the winners and Africans and Afro-descendants are the losers.
