    • In Colombia, TransAfrica Forum is working with Afro-descendants, who are very concerned about a planned Free Trade Agreement between the U.S. and the government of Colombia . Last year, TransAfrica Forum and like-minded groups, worked to stop the passage of a Free Trade Agreement with Colombia because of ongoing human rights abuses by the government and other actors. TransAfrica Forum advocated that the plight of the Afro-Colombians be recognized, given their particular marginalization and vulnerability to violence within Colombia.

This year, during the January State of the Union Address, President Bush identified passage of the Colombia FTA as a priority. But, as long as Afro-Columbians view the FTA as a “violation of human rights,” TransAfrica will continue to oppose its passage.

    • In Africa, the Bush Administration’s policy also includes a plan to expand the U.S. military footprint with the new Africa Command (AFRICOM). AFRICOM represents a commitment to the promotion and protection of U.S. state and corporate interests above those of African citizens.

    • As a member of the Jubilee USA Network, we continue to strongly advocate for cancellation of developing country debt. We are supporting two bills introduced by Congressional Black Caucus member Maxine Waters: H.R. 241, which cancels Haiti ’s external debt, and H.R. 2634, the Jubilee Act, which would cancel the debt of 67 countries, mostly in Africa . We are also a lead organization on the issue of “vulture funds.”
